Maintaining a lush and vibrant lawn requires consistent care and attention throughout the year.

As we approach the end of August, it’s essential to be mindful of lawn care to keep your grass healthy and thriving.

Together, let’s explore tips for treating red thread and weeds. And let’s not forget the importance of cultural work (think scarification and overseeding).

Red Thread:

Red Thread is a common lawn disease characterised by pinkish-red threads or patches on the grass blades. It’s an absolute pain. To control and prevent its spread, follow these steps:

1.) Mow your lawn regularly, we prefer every other day, but understandably life gets in the way, so go with something that works for you. Keep the grass at a recommended height (25mm-50mm) to discourage the disease’s growth.

2.) Avoid overwatering, as Red Thread thrives in damp conditions. Water deeply but infrequently to discourage it and prevent deep root growth. We recommend every other day (forecast-dependent!)

3.) Seasonal treatments by us. Our treatments are designed to promote healthy growth and recovery.

Weed Control:
We know that sipping Pimm’s in the sun (whilst it is out!) is preferable to tackling persistent weeds. To spend more time sunning, and less time gunning for these menaces, here are some tips to make life easier:

1.) Our treatments help keeps weeds off the lawn and the grass green.

2.) Remove the weeds by hand, or your trusty trowel – ensuring you remove the ENTIRE root system.

3.) Ensure proper mowing and watering. A healthy lawn is less susceptible to weeds.

Cultural Work: Scarification & Overseeding

Scarification is like exfoliating your lawn’s skin. Just as exfoliating removes dead skin and reveals fresh, rejuvenated skin, having your lawn scarified removes accumulated thatch and promotes healthier growth for your lawn.

This involves raking the lawn to remove thatch (accumulated dead grass and debris) to promote better air circulation.

Overseeding fills in bare patches and introduces new grass seed to enhance the lawn’s density and overall appearance. When scarification happens, this does leave your lawn bare in areas. Overseeding helps your lawn spring back quicker after scarification.

Addressing issues like red thread and weeds quickly, whilst also feeding your lawn with fertiliser will ensure you can relax on your garden-bed, rather than toiling away for the remaining summer we have left! By following these guidelines, you’ll be well on your way to maintaining a health and beautiful lawn that you won’t want to leave!

Whilst you can enjoy your healthy and beautiful garden, remember, we are here to help. Enjoy the rest of the sun!
